And unlike most tabletop radios, the WR-2 lets listeners adjust the treble and bass levels via the variable volume control. In its default mode, the rotary volume knob displays the volume level from 1 to 60. Tap it once, however, and it turns into a full-range treble control, and two taps creates a full-range bass control. Additional features include a clock with an alarm (radio or buzzer), an auxiliary input jack for connecting such devices as an iPod or MP3 player (both of which sound great through the speaker), a recording output jack, 10 memory presets that help you quickly find your favorite stations, and a full-featured infrared remote control.

A final bonus stems from the power backup function, which plays the radio for six minutes during a power failure (great for emergencies) and retains the memory preset and clock values for about an hour. The WR-2 measures roughly 9.5 by 4.5 by 6 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 5.5 pounds.

G-Force just might be the best Jerry Bruckheimer action film in many a moon. The film is exuberant, and its premise–don’t think big for an animated caper film, think small–brilliantly upends the more-bigger-faster trope of American action films… with cute, little, furry guinea pigs.

Bruckheimer, the action genius behind the likes of the Pirates of the Caribbean, Con Air, The Rock, Armageddon, and many more, here teams with visual effects maestro Hoyt Yeatman, who writes and directs. The combo is potent, and the fact that they streamed their blow-’em-up vision through a film about tiny rodents saving the world makes the whole confection a hilarious family-friendly experience as well as a satisfying action adventure. The premise isn’t earth-shattering: oddball, unexpected heroes are called on to save the day (Men in Black, Underdog, etc.). But the lowly guinea pig has been long overdue to get its moment in the spotlight. And now the free world knows whom it can really trust. The film mixes the animated heroes with real-life actors, including the sardonic British character actor Bill Nighy, who plays an evil mogul out to take over and/or destroy the world. The U.S. government, it turns out, has been nurturing a special squad for occasions just such as this. It’s just that it’s been nurturing them in small pens with wood shavings on the floor and running wheels for exercise. Will Arnett, deadpan and spot-on, plays the human agent who has the unenviable task of wrangling the guinea pig G-Force, and is a deft foil for the bad guys as well as for the mini-heroes.

But the true powerhouse acting belongs to those giving voices to the guinea pig agents, including Sam Rockwell, Penélope Cruz, Steve Buscemi, and, as the voice of a domesticated layabout, Jon Favreau. The film’s standout, though, is Tracy Morgan, whose Agent Blaster is bellicose, fearless, and as full of malapropisms as Morgan’s character on 30 Rock. The Nightmare Before Christmas (2-Disc Collector’s Edition + Digital Copy) Specifications

For those who never thought Disney would release a film in which Santa Claus is kidnapped and tortured, well, here it is! The full title is Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, which should give you an idea of the tone of this stop-action animated musical/fantasy/horror/comedy. It is based on characters created by Burton, the former Disney animator best known as the director of Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and the first two Batman movies. His benignly scary-funny sensibility dominates the story of Halloweentown resident Jack Skellington (voice by Danny Elfman, who also wrote the songs), who stumbles on a bizarre and fascinating alternative universe called … Christmastown! Directed by Henry Selick (who later made the delightful James and the Giant Peach), this PG-rated picture has a reassuringly light touch. As Roger Ebert noted in his review, “some of the Halloween creatures might be a tad scary for smaller children, but this is the kind of movie older kids will eat up; it has the kind of offbeat, subversive energy that tells them wonderful things are likely to happen.” –Jim Emerson

I purchased two of these controllers back in the fall of 1997 for each new. At the time few people were using USB for games, but it was no problem to daisy chain two of them together via the Gameport connectors on the back of my PC. The software for them is easy to use, though for a short time (I think in late 1999) there was a delay in getting an update for the system to work on Windows 2000. The software has long since been discontinued, but can still be found online.

The software lets you completely configure the buttons (even if the original games didn’t have joystick support). You can also create multiple profiles for your games, so that each game has a different setup, plus a generic setup for everything. Sometimes the software bugs out with two controllers connected though, and requires Windows to be restarted and/or the connectors checked before it will recognize the second pad. At least that was my experience…

The controller itself has two analog “flippers” a throttle slider, a POV “hat” switch (a tiny one), an analog thumb “stick,” digital command cross (movement pad), hot switch button (that can also just substitute as a generic action button), six main action buttons, two additional action buttons (which I like to use as “start/select” in console emulated games), plus still two more “flipper” digital buttons on the bottom. So that’s over 11 buttons for you to use, meaning it will be compatible with most games. About the only games this isn’t very good for are First Person Shooters made after about 1995 (when they started adding “Free Look” to the gameplay), since you’d have a cumbersome task moving and aiming at the same time while switching weapons, etc. For that you’d want a pad that has dual analog sticks on both sides of the interface, though everyone knows the best way to play such games is with a keyboard and optical mouse, anyhow!

After about eight years, one of the plastic joints holding the cord to the base of one of the controllers cracked. I secured it with electrical tape, but eventually it pulled away from the controller, exposing the wires. It still works fine, but I worry about severing the cords accidentally. Additionally I spilled some liquid on one of the analog “flippers” and so it “snaps” when pressed (but still registers properly), and probably needs to be opened up and cleaned. The other controller seems as good as the day it was purchased. Since I alternate using the controllers (I bought two for 2 player games), I’d say each one has had about 3.5 years of near continuous use.

The analog stick on this is not quite as good as on the Dreamcast controller, but it is still fairly good (and works the best on “four-way” type games or 3d games).

The ergonomics of the controller are great. My hands don’t get tired even after using these for hours of gaming.

I like the way there are lots of buttons, including the familiar “six button” layout for fighting games, and all of the buttons are programmable. This is great for “old school” gamers like myself who like to use DOSBox and emulators to play old PC, arcade, and console classics. The feel of the controller is reminiscent of the Dreamcast, Playstation and so forth, but with a better feel than all of them.

The only downside for modern gamers for this controller is the lack of “vibration.” I always thought this was a fairly useless gimmick, but a few games have a little more novelty to them with the feature, so I guess you’ll be missing out on that. However if you’re like me and realize that most games don’t use it, and it’s not that important on a gamepad (maybe on a steering wheel or flight stick), this isn’t a big con.

I would highly recommend this pad for any old school gamers out there, and if you can track down the proper software, it can play any of your old games, ESPECIALLY if those games did not have a button configuration utility. Just map keystrokes, button presses, to your buttons and you’re set!

This kit not only charges my batteries for the Panasonic DMC-LZ50 camera, but it also can charge from 12v batteries or from European voltage. And, as usual, it costs far less than the manufacturer’s charger. Accessories are a very high markup type of item for a retailer, so if you don’t shop around for an aftermarket unit you’re being had. I had to buy this because I can’t find my original Panasonic charger that shipped with the camera. Things just disappear! Especially after spring cleaning.

Loosely based on Alexander Key’s novel Escape to Witch Mountain, Race to Witch Mountain is not so much a remake of the 1975 film Escape to Witch Mountain as an entirely new film based on some key plot points from the former film. When two innocent-looking teens appear in Jack Bruno’s (Dwayne Johnson) cab and tell him that “we must travel in that direction,” Jack thinks it’s a bit strange, but shrugs it off and starts driving. Soon they’re being followed and chased off the road, but is it Jack’s past catching up with him or something much larger? Sara (AnnaSophia Robb) and Seth (Alexander Ludwig) reluctantly confess that they are aliens from another planet, but Jack refuses to accept their statement until Sara starts moving things with her mind and Seth slips through the body of the car and deflects the SUV that’s pursuing them. Sara and Seth tell Jack that they must recover their crashed spaceship in order to save earth from being taken over by aliens, so Jack takes them to see Dr. Alex Friedman (Carla Gugino); a scientist who he met by chance and who believes in the possible existence of extra-terrestrials. While the four are initially wary of one another, Dr. Friedman provides some valuable contacts and they begin trusting one another out of sheer necessity. Soon they’re battling secret government agencies, heavily armed personnel, and even a cybernetic Siphon (that looks a lot like a Cylon from Battlestar Galactica) in a desperate attempt to gain access to the heavily fortified Witch Mountain and the crashed spacecraft. Action-packed car chases dominate the film (a bit excessively, in this reviewer’s opinion), but the acting and chemistry between actors is good as is the suspense and intrigue. ok well I didn’t actually buy this, as I had no idea it existed until I found one leaning against a tree on my street, half buried in snow. Someone had cut the power chord so I took it home, the machine was pretty beat up but I rewired the power chord and turned it on and the clock lit up and a hissing noise came through both speakers, as it turns out I wasn’t on a radio station so I changed the station and it came in crystal clear. then I plugged in my DVD player and switched it to the AV slot and the screen lit up clear as ever and played the DVD very well. so all in all it is a great product even after being exposed to the elements.
