At the end of the 19th Century began the historian, scholar and anthropologist, Andrew Lang, published collections of fairy tales from around the world. The first volume was "The Blue Fairy Book" published in 1887. Lang was not a real anthropologist who, like the German brothers Grimm. It 'was much more "translation," said a source from the collector of fairy tales, stories of people who transcribed, in which the stories were passed from mouth to mouth. In fact, many stories in his first band, such asRumpelstiltskin, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Hansel and Gretel have been translated from Grimm's fairy tale books. Some of his "myths" were also "relatively new copies fantasy fiction such as Journey to Lilliput, the first of four episodes of Jonathan Swift's" Gulliver's Travels.
My inspiration to comment on long series of history books for the sheer volume of stories, wonderful woodcut illustrations, some few of which are almostas popular as the stories (though not exactly in the same league of Sir John Tenniel illustrations for young imaginations of Lewis Carroll), and the fact that this young man was me.
With twelve of these books, with 30-36 stories in each book, this is more than 400 different stories. If you could recommend something in a series grandparents' house, it would be a complete set of these books.
Needless to say there are some "warnings" to accompany the booksBrings together over 100 years. You meet a reasonable number of words by which an adult may not even be aware, not to mention 1-5 years. For example, the second page of the fairytale Princess Mayblossom Red Book, a sign is a witch paste sulfur. This requires at least three explanations. What is brimstone, mush, mushroom, and because sulfur is that bad. Even more difficult is when a prince came to town on a white horse, "and danced caracoledthe sound of trumpets. "In 19th century London, caracoling (making half turn right and left) was probably as common as" acceleration "is known today. But if you're a grandfather, is half the fun much to explain the new words and ideas of young people-there.
There is another "danger", which can take just a little 'further explanation, although in today's world of detective stories on TV, I'm not sure that most of the children to be totally immune already upset by the deathand corpses. In these stories, a lot of people and creatures in a very unpleasant, killed, and many very good people and creatures suffer very unpleasant. It 'ironic that critics in their stories for a long time were considered "unreality, brutality, and escape as harmful to young readers, while affirming that these stories under the serious consideration of those aged couple" were. The success of an entire library of Disney feature length cartoon based on theseStories is a testament to how they work with children. But beware, Uncle Walt are things a bit clean '. Long versions retain very little, which was ugly and uncomfortable in some of these stories.
The downside is the large amount of stories, although some come from very different parts of the world, there is a considerable amount of overlap in theme, plot and characters. But when you get a different story of a beautiful girl abused by a stepmother,Will have several months of Cinderella or Little Glass Slipper, see the Blue Fairy Book. The downside is that you try to remember what the game was another story with a similar theme game.
There is a very big word of warning about purchasing these books from Amazon or a similar outlet online. I stopped counting when I go to twelve different editions of The Blue Fairy Book, or a band, are among them several of these books. Not all of theseOriginal editions of woodcuts and worse still, not everyone has an index and introduction. A publisher has all twelve volumes, of Dover. other publishers, like publishing, Flying Chipmunk (yes, this is thus the name) are all original illustrations, summary, introduction, but I'm not sure that all twelve volumes have Verlag. Dover certainly not, as I just bought, all twelve of them from Amazon.
Although I suspect that these stories may havewas "old hat" for some time, maybe with the popularity of the "Lord of the Rings, the stories of Narnia and the Harry Potter stories, which all have their share of suffering and death, can a Revival. Here is the main attraction, get for little money and space, Grammy and Grandpa a great resource for the bond with the children.
